Hello loyal Southie Tree-ers,
This is Bethany, the program coordinator for the past year here at Southie Trees. It is coming down to my final days working for Southie Trees under the South Boston Community Development Corp. and I just wanted to give a big thank you to everyone who has made the programs and projects of Southie Trees a huge success. Over the past year I have seen this organization grow and thrive with the help of so many members of the South Boston community (who I might add embraced me with open arms) and environmental organizations all around Boston.
Since I started in July 2012, Southie Trees has planted 28 trees (with a total of 43 trees planted since 2011) around the community. We have instituted 2 very successful programs, Water-A-Tree and Plant-A-Tree, and conducted a survey of the benefits of street trees on West Broadway. We have held educational programs with The Labouré Center, Excel High School, and Boston Green Academy. We have created partnerships with Department of Conservation and Recreation, The Nature Conservancy, and Boston Natural Areas Network. And, perhaps coolest of all, we brought Jason Mraz here to Southie to help save trees on Castle Island. Not bad for 12 months huh?
I am incredibly proud of the work I have been able to accomplish here and the friends and relationships I have picked up along the way. I see a clear environmental future for South Boston and the continued growth of Southie Trees. Our new Program Coordinator, Devon Grodkiewicz, will be starting July 17th and will continue our programs and planting initiatives for the next 6 months.
I am so excited for the future of Southie Trees and cannot wait to see what unfolds! Once again thank you to everyone who has been a part of making Southie a better place over the past year, I hope your support and passion for the environment continues! Of course if you have any questions or comments you can still reach us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the SBNDC offices.
